Permanent fixes for anything in plastic surgery don't really exist because things change with time.
The simple answer is yes — but the treatments don't always work as well as patients hope. Understanding why you have cellulite is the key to choosing the right treatment.
Everyone has bands that connect the skin to the underlying muscle. In some people, these bands are naturally tight enough to pull the skin inward, creating dimples.
As skin becomes looser over time — from aging, collagen loss, or weight changes — it sags between the bands, making cellulite more visible. You may have always had these bands, but they only become noticeable once the skin loosens.
Many patients have a combination of both problems.
For patients whose cellulite is caused by tight bands with relatively firm skin, the best approach is to go in and cut the bands. Dr. Killeen's preferred device for this is Aveli — a tool with a small hook and blade that allows the surgeon to hook each band individually and release it.
Weight loss can also help with cellulite in this group and can be a useful add-on if that's a goal.
One caveat: these treatments aren't always as effective as we'd like. Sometimes the bands scar back down after being cut, and the tissue can be stiff with skin that has some "memory." Lymphatic massage or cupping after the procedure can help maintain and even improve the result.
For patients whose cellulite is primarily caused by loose skin, the best approach is skin tightening. The devices on the market today can deliver roughly 20–30% tightening when done properly — but the results aren't permanent. The effect wears off over time and treatments typically need to be repeated.
Patients who have both tight bands and loose skin benefit from band cutting combined with skin tightening for the best overall result.
It's important to recognize that our bodies change as we age. We gain weight, lose collagen, and gravity takes its toll. Truly permanent fixes for anything in plastic surgery don't really exist because the body continues to change. Depending on the cause of your cellulite and the treatment used, results may improve the appearance significantly — but maintenance is often part of the plan.
If you're bothered by cellulite, the first step is figuring out whether it's caused by tight bands, loose skin, or both — and then choosing the right treatment approach from there.
