Liposuction Serving Beverly Hills & Los Angeles

Dr. Killeen's practice is located in the heart of Beverly Hills, with liposuction patients traveling in from across the greater Los Angeles area, including West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Bel Air, Pacific Palisades, Hollywood, Pasadena, Calabasas, and Sherman Oaks. She performs liposuction for patients from across the Los Angeles area, often combining it with tummy tuck, mommy makeover, or fat transfer procedures.

Every liposuction procedure is performed at an accredited facility, either the Quad A (AAAASF) accredited surgery center in Dr. Killeen's Beverly Hills office or Cedars-Sinai, with board-certified anesthesiologists. Patients who stay overnight after surgery at the center recover at a partner recovery facility. For patients traveling from outside the LA area, the team helps coordinate scheduling, recommended recovery accommodations nearby, and post-operative follow-up so the experience feels seamless from consultation through final result.

What is Liposuction?

Also called lipoplasty or suction-assisted lipectomy, liposuction involves the removal of unwanted fat deposits using a thin cannula inserted through tiny incisions.

Precision Sculpting

Unlike traditional weight-loss methods, liposuction reshapes specific areas with precision. A tumescent fluid is used to minimize bleeding, provide local anesthesia, and facilitate smooth fat removal.

Targeted Fat Removal

Especially effective for stubborn fat pockets that persist despite a healthy lifestyle, allowing patients to enjoy a more contoured and balanced figure.

What It Does Not Do

Liposuction removes fat. It does not remove or tighten loose skin, and it does not repair separated abdominal muscles. Those are what a tummy tuck treats.

Liposuction Techniques

Every liposuction follows the same basic approach: numbing fluid first, then fat removal through a thin cannula. Devices are added only when they help a specific area.

Tumescent Fluid

Every case starts with tumescent fluid, a diluted numbing solution that reduces bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. When a practice advertises "tumescent liposuction," it usually means liposuction done awake under local anesthesia.

Awake Liposuction

For a few smaller areas, liposuction can be done awake under local anesthesia. The recovery is faster, it is often less expensive, and there are no risks from general anesthesia. Dr. Killeen keeps awake cases to two or three hours at most, and larger cases are done under general anesthesia.

Ultrasound-Assisted (VASER)

Dr. Killeen prefers ultrasound-assisted liposuction (VASER) for firm, fibrous fat, such as the male chest and fat on the upper back.

Energy-Assisted Skin Tightening

Radiofrequency and similar devices heat the tissue to help the skin tighten a little more. She almost always adds heat for the neck and often uses it for the arms, but these devices are not for everyone. They can cause burns, pigment changes, and fluid collections, and they will not reliably tighten loose skin.

Branded procedures that advertise lasers or other devices are still liposuction plus an energy source, and they do not make the incisions smaller.

Common Treatment Areas

Upper Body

  • Under the chin and neck
  • Arms
  • Bra rolls and armpit fat
  • Upper back
  • Breasts, for a reduction of about one cup
  • Male chest (gynecomastia)

Core

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Back, as part of 360 liposuction

Lower Body

  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Banana roll, below the buttock crease

Some areas need extra care. Liposuction across the fold under the buttock can drop the buttock crease, so the banana roll is treated conservatively through an incision hidden in the crease.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction can offer both aesthetic and practical benefits:

Aesthetic Benefits of Liposuction

Aesthetic Benefits

  • Sculpted Silhouette: Creates a slimmer, more sculpted silhouette
  • Enhanced Fit: Enhances clothing fit and comfort
  • Smooth Contours: A healthy layer of fat is left under the skin
  • Body Proportions: Improves body proportions and balance
Emotional and Functional Benefits of Liposuction

Emotional & Functional Benefits

  • Boosted Confidence: Boosts self-esteem and confidence
  • Healthy Habits: Encourages healthier lifestyle habits
  • Small Incisions: A few small incisions placed in discreet spots
  • Awake Option: Smaller areas can often be treated under local anesthesia

Medical Applications

Gynecomastia

In men, chest fat can be removed with liposuction, and VASER helps with firm, fibrous tissue. True gynecomastia also involves firm gland tissue that liposuction cannot remove well, so the gland is cut out separately. In teenage boys, surgery is rarely needed, because most improve on their own (gynecomastia in teens).

Lipomas

Liposuction can remove a lipoma, but it is often not the best choice. Lipomas come back more often after liposuction, and the tissue cannot be checked by pathology, so Dr. Killeen usually cuts them out instead (why lipomas are excised).

Are You a Candidate?

Ideal Candidates:

  • At or near a goal weight they can maintain
  • Good skin tone and elasticity
  • Fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise
  • Non-smokers in good physical and emotional health
  • Have realistic expectations

You May Need to Wait If You:

  • Plan to lose significant weight
  • Have loose skin or separated abdominal muscles, which a tummy tuck treats better
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have medical conditions increasing surgical risk

Skin quality matters as much as the fat. Past smoking (even if you quit years ago), sun damage, stretch marks, and big weight swings all make the skin less likely to shrink back after liposuction (how skin quality affects results).

Maintaining Your Results

Fat cells removed do not return, and results stay stable as long as you don't gain a significant amount of weight. If you do gain weight, it tends to show up in new places, which is where the myth that liposuction makes fat move comes from (does fat come back or move). Maintaining your new shape requires:

  • Stable Weight: Maintain a consistent, healthy weight
  • Healthy Diet: Balanced nutrition and proper hydration
  • Regular Exercise: Consistent physical activity routine
  • No Smoking: Avoid smoking, which damages skin elasticity
  • Skin Care: Protect your skin from the sun

If you lose weight after liposuction, slow and steady loss gives your skin time to recover (losing weight after liposuction).

What to Expect: The Liposuction Procedure

Here is what to expect on the day of surgery:

  1. Consultation & Planning

Customized treatment plan based on your goals, anatomy, and skin quality
  2. Anesthesia

Awake under local anesthesia for smaller areas, or general anesthesia for larger cases
  3. Incisions

Tiny incisions placed in natural body creases
  4. Numbing Fluid

Tumescent fluid numbs the area and limits bleeding
  5. Fat Removal

A cannula is used to sculpt and remove fat, leaving a healthy layer under the skin
  6. Compression Garments

Applied after surgery to reduce swelling, help prevent fluid build-up, and support the new contour

Conservative by Design

Taking as much fat as possible is what leads to lumps and dents. Dr. Killeen leaves a healthy layer of fat under the skin and would rather do a second round later than overdo the first (fixing uneven results).

Keeping You Warm

Keeping a normal body temperature during surgery is important, especially in larger cases, so the operating room and fluids are kept warm.

Combining Liposuction with Other Procedures

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

For patients with excess skin or muscle separation, a tummy tuck does what liposuction cannot, and liposuction alone on a loose abdomen carries more risk and often disappoints (liposuction or a tummy tuck). Being a better tummy tuck candidate doesn't mean you have to have one. During a tummy tuck, liposuction of the flanks is common, and the abdomen itself is treated sparingly.

Mommy Makeover

Liposuction is often part of a mommy makeover, along with breast surgery and a tummy tuck, for comprehensive post-pregnancy contouring.

Breast Reduction

Liposuction of the bra roll or flanks can be added to a breast reduction when it helps, not by default (when adding liposuction makes sense). For some women, liposuction alone can reduce the breasts by about one cup through two tiny incisions.

Fat Transfer

Fat removed by liposuction can be grafted to the breast for a gain of about half a cup to a cup, or used to fill dents. Only part of the fat removed is usable, and placing the right amount matters more than placing the most (see fat grafting to the breast).

Safety Considerations

Minimize Risk by Choosing:

  • A board-certified plastic surgeon
  • Accredited surgical facility
  • A surgeon who offers more than one procedure and can recommend the right one
  • Proper pre-op evaluation and post-op care

Possible Complications:

  • Bruising, swelling, numbness
  • Lumps, dents, or an uneven contour
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Loose skin that does not shrink back
  • Rare but serious: infection, blood clots, fat embolism, or injury to the bowel or other organs

Removing too much fat and fluid can cause blood loss, fluid shifts that affect heart rhythm, and toxicity from the numbing medicine. Dr. Killeen caps liposuction at 5 liters per surgery, the California limit for outpatient surgery, and for most patients two to three areas at a time is reasonable. Bowel injury is rare, and it is most likely while the numbing fluid goes in, which is why cannula angle, positioning, and keeping still matter (organ injury risk during abdominal liposuction).

Recovery Timeline

Your recovery is carefully guided with comprehensive support at every stage:

Liposuction Recovery Timeline
  1. Day 1–2

Soreness varies from mild to significant. Start walking the same day, which helps prevent blood clots.
  2. Week 1

Back to work for desk jobs. A compression garment is worn full time, usually for about a month.
  3. Weeks 2–4

Resume light exercise; swelling continues to decrease.
  4. 3–6 Months

The skin shrinks over three to six months as the final contour shows. How much it tightens depends on your skin quality.

Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage helps keep things as smooth as possible while you heal. It cannot prevent the lumps that can come with weight gain or a pregnancy later, though.
