What Is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes the small muscles responsible for expression lines. This softens wrinkles and can help keep new ones from forming. Muscles that aren't treated keep working, so you can still show emotion.

Proven Treatment

Botox® Cosmetic has been FDA-approved for frown lines since 2002. When real product is used in approved ways, serious problems such as botulism are extremely rare.

Alternative Options

We also offer Dysport® and Jeuveau®, similar treatments with slight differences in formulation. During your consultation, we'll help you choose the product that fits your facial anatomy and treatment goals.

How Botox® Works

Botox® temporarily inhibits the signal between nerves and muscles in targeted areas. This allows those muscles to relax, smoothing out the overlying skin.

Muscle Relaxation

Over time, this not only reduces the appearance of existing wrinkles but can help prevent deeper lines from forming by reducing repetitive muscle contractions. Lines tend to etch in when very strong muscles go untreated for many years.

Your Choice of Movement

How much movement you keep is up to you. Some people want the muscle very relaxed, and others want to keep a lot of motion. The dose is planned around your preference and can be adjusted at your two-week follow-up.

Botox® vs. Dysport® vs. Jeuveau®

People often say "Botox" to mean any of several medications that do the same thing. Botox®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® are all FDA-approved for frown lines between the brows, and the differences between them are small.

Choosing a Product

The product is chosen at your consultation. If one stops working as well as it used to, another can be tried.

Spread

Spread is something to minimize, not a selling point. Placing the right dose in the right spot is what keeps the product where it belongs.

What Does Botox® Treat?

Botox® works best for dynamic wrinkles, those caused by repeated facial movements such as smiling, frowning, or squinting. Some of these are FDA-approved uses and others are off-label, which we'll explain at your consultation. Common treatment areas include:

Facial Wrinkles

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow's feet (outer eyes)
  • "11" lines between the brows
  • Bunny lines (sides of nose)
  • Chin dimpling
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Neck bands

Facial Enhancements

  • Lip Flip: Subtly lifts the upper lip for a fuller pout
  • Brow Lift: Lifts drooping brows for a more awake, open-eyed appearance
  • Jaw Slimming: Slims the masseter muscle for a more sculpted jawline

Therapeutic Uses

  • TMJ / Jaw Tension Relief
  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), including the underarms and hairline
  • Facial flushing or rosacea that hasn't responded to other treatments

The Forehead

The forehead takes the most care. Too much can drop the brows, and uneven dosing can leave an arched, surprised look. A Botox brow lift can sometimes make that surprised look worse.

Around the Mouth

Some people love a lip flip, while others find it harder to drink through a straw or say certain words until it wears off. Product that drifts in the lower face can leave a crooked smile for a while. For vertical lip lines, Botox is worth trying, but improving skin quality first usually does more.

Under the Eyes

Botox under the eyes doesn't usually make the eyelid look younger. It can look uneven, and it can even make the lower eyelid droop.

    • The entire treatment usually takes under 30 minutes
  3. After Treatment

    • Avoid lying down, exercising, or touching the area for 4–6 hours
    • Mild redness, swelling, or tenderness may occur but fades quickly
    • A follow-up visit at about two weeks to check the result and adjust if needed

Results & Longevity

Timeline of Results

You may begin to see early softening of lines within 2–3 days, with full results visible at 7–14 days.

Results are gradual and natural-looking, allowing you to ease into your refreshed appearance.

Duration & Maintenance

Results typically last about 3–4 months in the upper face. Treatments around the mouth wear off sooner; a lip flip lasts about four to six weeks.

Most people repeat treatment every 3–4 months. Reasonable doses at reasonable intervals matter, because high doses and frequent touch-ups for every flicker of movement have been linked to the body becoming resistant to the toxin.

When a Line Won't Go Away

Some lines are unlikely to go away completely with Botox alone, especially lines etched in at rest after years of strong muscle movement. Resurfacing (laser, microneedling, or a peel) or filler can help with those (why a wrinkle won't go away after Botox).

Safety and Choosing an Injector

Botox is a real medical treatment. Botulism from counterfeit or misused product can be life-threatening, because it can weaken the muscles that help you breathe. To protect yourself:

  • Make sure a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon oversees the practice
  • Ask where the product came from, and ask to see the vial
  • Treat an unusually low price as a red flag; counterfeit product has turned up even at licensed clinics
  • Never inject yourself with product bought online; no ethical company sells neurotoxin to the public

Possible Side Effects

  • Bruising, headache, or mild redness at the injection sites
  • A drooping eyelid or brow if product spreads or the dose is too high, which can last weeks to months
  • An uneven or surprised-looking brow
  • A crooked smile or trouble with a straw after lower-face treatment

Am I a Candidate for Botox®?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have mild to moderate wrinkles from facial expressions
  • Are looking for a non-surgical treatment with minimal downtime
  • Are in good health and not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Want a subtle, refreshed appearance, without losing expression

Botox® is not recommended for those with:

  • Certain neurological conditions
  • Active skin infections in the treatment area
  • Significant volume loss (filler may be a better fit)
  • Loose skin (skin tightening or surgery may be a better fit)

Benefits of Botox®

Botox® offers several practical benefits:

Benefits of Botox

Benefits of Botox®

  • Wrinkle Reduction: Softens existing lines and can help keep deeper ones from forming
  • Natural Movement: Untreated muscles keep working, so your expressions stay your own
  • Quick Treatment: Fast, in-office procedure that fits into your busy schedule
  • No Downtime: Return to daily activities immediately with no recovery period needed
  • Months of Results: About 3–4 months in the upper face

Men get Botox® too, sometimes called "Brotox." Whether for work, dating, or simply looking more refreshed, treatment is tailored to male facial anatomy for natural, masculine results.
