I love the 3D tattoo because they look incredible and they're flat. All of the surgical options make a permanently erect mound that drives patients nuts.
Losing the nipple during breast cancer treatment is a reality many patients face. The good news is there are several reconstruction options — and my favorite might surprise you.
I'll start with my favorite option: 3D tattooing. Here's why I love it:
Every surgical nipple reconstruction option creates a small mound that is permanently erect and tends to be firmer than a natural nipple. This makes it more visible through clothing, and it drives patients crazy. The 3D tattoo avoids this entirely.
For patients who feel it's important to have actual projection, the most popular surgical options are local flap procedures:
The concept is the same: we make incisions in the area, raise up small arms of tissue, and curve them around to create a nipple mound from your own skin.
These are nice little surgeries, but there are challenges:
If the flap doesn't provide enough projection or the results are uneven, we can place something inside to add volume:
All of these options create more projection, but again, they all produce a result that's firmer than a natural nipple and visible through clothing. For this reason, I typically steer patients away from these additions.
If you don't want surgery or tattooing, stick-on silicone nipple prosthetics are available — you can even buy them online in various colors. They can work for special events or specific situations.
However, in my experience, most patients don't love them for everyday use:
