I went to an implant testing facility where they had an implant in a hydraulic press putting a lot of pressure on it, and they did it six million times, and the implant did not rupture. So for contact sports, or any sport, it is pretty unlikely your implant is going to break.
A really common worry from anyone active: how likely is a breast implant to break, especially if you play sports?
The simple answer: pretty unlikely. Implants are far tougher than people assume. Let me show you why, and then explain what actually does cause ruptures, because it isn't what most people think.
Breast implants are really, really strong.
Here's the everyday proof from my own operating room: we squeeze these things through small funnels to insert them through a limited incision. That is a lot of force applied to a device, repeatedly, and they handle it without complaint. It's genuinely hard to break them.
I also have an older implant that's been sitting on my desk for almost ten years, and it's still perfectly intact and strong.
The most convincing demonstration I've seen was at an implant testing facility.
They had an implant in a hydraulic press, applying a substantial amount of pressure, and they cycled it six million times.
The implant didn't rupture.
Six million compression cycles. Whatever you're doing in a game of soccer, at the gym, or in a martial arts class is not approaching that.
So for contact sports, or any sport, it's pretty unlikely that your implant is going to break.
Implants obviously do rupture. But the causes are mostly unrelated to what happens to you day to day. Ruptures typically come from one of two places:
Most ruptures probably originate from damage done to the implant while it's being placed in the operating room. An instrument nick or a stress point created during insertion becomes the weak spot that fails later.
This is one of the quieter arguments for careful surgical technique, the implant's lifespan can be shaped by how it was handled in the first twenty minutes of its life.
The other pathway is time. When you have implants for many years, they can develop ripples, and that repeated small rubbing at the fold points creates a weak area.
Eventually that weakness gives way. So with time, implants do rupture, just not because you played a contact sport.
If you're an athlete or you just live an active life, your sport is not the thing that will break your implant. Don't give up rugby over this.
The real drivers are surgical handling and age, which is exactly why the guidance is about monitoring over time rather than avoiding activity:
Go play your sport. Your implant can take considerably more than the game can dish out.
