Can you be too old for breast reconstruction? I do not think so. Age is just a number. What is really important is your overall health and whether you can tolerate surgery. Every patient should have the opportunity for reconstruction so they can feel whole after cancer treatment.
Rapid-fire round. Three questions I get constantly, answered quickly, with links to the deeper explanation on each if you want the full version.
Unfortunately, they can. There's roughly a 5 to 6% chance of meaningful regrowth.
That also means the large majority of patients never experience it. And your individual risk isn't fixed, it drops considerably when three things are true:
Those three conditions are the difference between operating on a breast that has settled and operating on one that's still changing. (Full breakdown of the data and risk factors in how common breast regrowth actually is.)
There's a lot of talk about injecting Botox into scars to reduce tension. Do I use it?
I don't often use Botox for scars. But I want to be fair to the evidence rather than dismissive:
There is data that Botox can help someone with scarring in the right situation.
The logic is sound. Tension across a healing incision is one of the main drivers of a bad scar, and relaxing the muscle pulling on that incision can reduce it. It's just not part of my routine practice, and "the right situation" is doing real work in that sentence.
If you're dealing with a difficult scar, there are approaches I reach for more often, injections like Kenalog and 5-FU and the broader scar treatment toolkit.
I don't think so.
Age is just a number. What actually matters is:
Your age or medical conditions might change what we recommend, a different technique, a staged approach, or implant-based rather than a longer flap operation. But changing the plan is not the same as being disqualified.
Every patient should have the opportunity for reconstruction so they can feel whole after cancer treatment.
That's the part I feel strongly about. Reconstruction isn't cosmetic indulgence at the end of cancer care, it's part of recovering from it. (More on the health-over-chronology framework in am I too old for plastic surgery, and on why reconstruction should be the default when possible.)
