Another Tragic Loss in Florida: Ahmonique Miller and the Danger of Unlicensed Aftercare

There has been another tragic loss of a patient undergoing inexpensive plastic surgery in Florida. Ahmonique Miller traveled from Las Vegas with her sister to have surgery at Avana Plastic Surgery, and she passed away later that day at an unlicensed aftercare facility.

I want to walk through what was reported, and then, as I always try to do with these stories, focus on what you as a patient can actually look at to keep yourself safe. Because this was so unnecessary.

According to reporting on the case:

• She had surgery at the facility and was then taken to an unlicensed aftercare.
• It's unclear exactly how long she was there.
• She was given medications, reported as two doses of a painkiller as well as a muscle relaxant.
• Sometime after that, she was found unresponsive.
• EMS was called. When they arrived, they found her face down in the bed, heavily bandaged, and in rigor mortis.

That last detail is the one that stops me cold. Rigor mortis means she had died at least two hours before EMS was ever called. And because she was found face down, it appears no attempts were made to resuscitate her.

Look at the surgical facility itself. This practice employs a variety of surgeons, and from what I saw on their website, only one of them is a board-certified plastic surgeon. The others included:

• Several people who claim plastic surgery training but have no board certification
• "Cosmetic surgeons" (I've made videos about what that term actually means before)
• A general surgeon with no further training
• A dermatologist

Here's the question I'd want every patient to sit with:

And there's a follow-up that matters just as much. Even if you go to the one doctor there who did complete plastic surgery training, earned board certification, and holds hospital privileges, why are you comfortable seeing someone who is fine working alongside people who didn't? That says something about the standards of the whole operation. This is the same pattern I've written about with plastic surgery "chop shops" and doctors practicing outside their specialty.

The cost of the aftercare was itself a red flag. Reporting stated it was $1,200 for one week of care.

For perspective: in the greater Los Angeles area, aftercare runs anywhere from $900 to $3,000 per night. So a full week for $1,200 is dramatically below what real, staffed, qualified aftercare costs. The price alone should have made someone suspicious.

When a price is that far below market, something is being cut, and what gets cut is almost always the qualifications of the people watching you. It's the same math I keep coming back to with bargain procedures that end in disaster.

If you're signing on to have someone care for you after surgery, you need to know the qualifications of the people caring for you. Specifically, you want adequately and properly trained nursing staff, because trained nurses are the difference between a close call and a tragedy. Nurses are expertly trained to:

• Assess you as a patient and recognize when something is wrong
• Know whether the medications prescribed to you are appropriate to take, and when they aren't
• Monitor for adverse reactions to those medications
• And most importantly, actually attempt to resuscitate you if you get into trouble, rather than leaving you for EMS to find

That last point is the most upsetting part of this story. Someone in that room needed to recognize a deteriorating patient, and no one did.

Concretely, before any surgery, especially away from home:

1. Is your surgeon board-certified in plastic surgery? (Here's how to verify it.)
2. Do they have hospital privileges? (Why that matters.)
3. Who else does this facility employ, and are they properly trained?
4. Is the aftercare licensed? Who exactly will be watching you, and what are their credentials?
5. Does the price make sense? A too-good-to-be-true number is information.
6. What happens if I have an emergency there? Is anyone qualified and equipped to respond?

This is also the core of why traveling far from home for surgery carries added risk, you're often relying on facilities and aftercare you had no ability to vet.

Ahmonique Miller traveled to Florida for inexpensive surgery and died the same day at an unlicensed aftercare, reportedly after receiving two doses of a painkiller and a muscle relaxant, found face down and already in rigor mortis when EMS finally arrived.

Certification and education matter. It matters that you have a properly trained, properly certified surgeon, and it matters just as much that you have properly trained people caring for you afterward. The surgery is only half of it. Recovery is when you're most vulnerable, and it is not the place to save money on unqualified supervision.
